Glutathione and Vitamin C IV Drips, Explained
Both are real compounds doing real work in your body. Both are also sold for things the evidence does not support, and one of them carries safety issues that deserve more attention than they get.
Glutathione and vitamin C are the two things most often added to a drip once the base bag is chosen, and they are usually sold on the same idea: antioxidants mop up free radicals, free radicals cause damage, therefore more antioxidants must mean less damage.
That chain sounds reasonable and is where the trouble starts. It is a plausible mechanism, not a demonstrated outcome, and decades of antioxidant supplement trials have repeatedly failed to show the benefits the mechanism predicted.
Glutathione IV therapy
Glutathione is a molecule your body makes itself, from three amino acids. It is genuinely central to how your liver processes toxins and how cells manage oxidative stress — a real and important part of your biochemistry, not an invention.
A glutathione drip is sold for detoxification, immune support, anti-ageing, liver health, and — by a wide margin the biggest driver of demand worldwide — skin lightening. The human evidence for intravenous glutathione in healthy people is limited, and there is an open question about how much of an infused dose your cells actually take up as intact glutathione.
Vitamin C IV therapy
Vitamin C by mouth is uncontroversial and well understood. Intravenous vitamin C is a different proposition, because it reaches blood concentrations that swallowing simply cannot — your gut limits how much it will absorb, and an IV bypasses that limit entirely. That is the actual pharmacological argument for giving it this way, and it is a real one.
What those concentrations achieve clinically in a healthy person is much less clear. It is commonly sold for immune support, energy, and skin, and the evidence for those uses in people who are not deficient is weak. Actual vitamin C deficiency is a real condition and treating it works — but that is a diagnosis, not a wellness purchase.
The screening that should happen first
There is one test that separates a careful provider from a careless one, and it is worth knowing by name.
- A history of kidney stones is a specific concern with high-dose vitamin C, which is processed into oxalate
- Kidney disease of any kind changes the calculation for both compounds
- Asthma — some people react badly to sulphites, which can be present in glutathione preparations
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding, where safety data is absent rather than reassuring
- High-dose vitamin C can also distort blood glucose meter readings, which matters if you are diabetic
The short version
Both are real compounds with real roles in your body. Neither has good evidence behind the wellness claims they are usually sold on. Both have specific groups of people who should avoid them, and one required screening test that a serious provider will already be doing. Where either is being offered for a medical condition — cancer above all — that belongs with the doctor treating you, not on a drip menu.
